What Is the Cat Clapping Meme?

The black cat with a human grin and human hands: who posted it, what happens in the clip, how it spread on TikTok and how to make your own pet’s version.

Last updated: 2026-10-19

The cat clapping meme (also called "clapping cat" or "black cat clapping") is a short vertical video of a real black cat that, after getting a treat, stands up on its hind legs, grins with human teeth and slowly claps a pair of human hands. The grin and the hands were added with AI. People use it as sarcastic, deadpan applause, and now they make the same clip with their own pets: Cat Clapping AI turns a photo of your cat, dog or other pet into its own clapping version.

Who Made the Original Cat Clapping Video

The original was posted on Instagram on September 25, 2026 by Aleksandr Kim, who posts as @merkurianin. The caption was just "#cat". The cat is his real black cat, filmed at home; the human grin and the human hands were added with AI. As of October 19, 2026, the post showed about 2.6 million likes and about 8,500 comments. He posted the same clip on TikTok that day, also captioned "#cat".

The meme has since been covered by Yahoo and listed on meme.com.

What Happens in the Clip, Beat by Beat

The original runs about 10.6 seconds, filmed vertically at home:

  1. The sneaky treat. The owner looks around, as if checking that nobody is watching, and picks up a treat.
  2. Feeding time. Filmed from above, he feeds the cat on a tiled floor. His knee and bare foot are in the frame.
  3. "Shh." He smiles and puts a finger to his lips.
  4. The grin and the claps. The cat stands up on its hind legs, grins with human teeth and claps loudly with human hands.
  5. The straight face. At the end, he looks into the camera without a smile.

There's no music in it. All you hear is the room and the loud claps, which is a big part of why it lands.

How the Clapping Cat Spread on TikTok

Within days the clip moved from Instagram to TikTok, mostly as a green-screen reaction: creators put the clapping cat over their own setup so the cat delivers the applause at the end.

  • On September 28, 2026, @asian5767 posted a green-screen edit captioned "My teacher took my phone..".
  • On September 30, 2026, @mis2027seniors posted its own version.
  • On October 1, 2026, @yeltiktok posted "Like dang bro be quiet #clappingcatmeme".

After the reaction edits came the next wave: people making AI versions with their own pets, from cats of other colors to dogs. The hashtags you'll see most are #clappingcatmeme, #clappingcat, #catclapping and #cat.

What the Clapping Cat Means and Why People Use It

The clapping cat is mock applause. A real cat face with a wide human grin, plus slow, flat claps, reads as "wow, great job" said with a straight face. That's why it shows up after:

  • someone behaving badly, like the teacher taking a phone,
  • someone being far too loud, with captions like "be quiet",
  • anything that deserves a sarcastic round of applause, sometimes with "stop clapping" in the caption.

A version starring your own pet works the same way, and it's funnier when people know the cat (or dog) in the video.

How the AI Version of Your Pet Works

On this site, the video isn't cut from the original. It's made from your photo, or two photos, and a written routine that follows the meme's beats.

What comes from the meme:

  • the small treat from a hand at the start,
  • the pet standing up on its hind legs and staring into the camera,
  • the wide human grin and the slow, deadpan claps with human hands,
  • the sly finger-to-the-lips "shh",
  • an ordinary bright home, filmed like casual phone footage from above,
  • quiet room sound and loud claps, with no music.

What comes from your photos:

  • your pet's own fur color, pattern, markings and eye color, so it doesn't have to be a black cat; the hands come out in matching fur,
  • if you add a photo of yourself, you as the owner: you check that nobody's watching, hand over the treat, smile and go "shh", then look into the lens with a straight face and reach out as if to shake on the deal.

Without your photo, the owner is just a hand giving the treat, a knee and a bare foot at the edge of the frame, never a face. The AI sometimes keeps the background of your photo instead of a new room, so the backdrop can vary.

Make Your Own Pet's Version

Go to the generator on the homepage, sign in with Google, upload a photo of your pet and, if you like, one of yourself. Pick 6, 10 or 15 seconds (6, 10 or 15 credits; 10 seconds is about the length of the original) and you get a vertical 9:16 MP4 in 720p, usually in about 3–4 minutes. The step-by-step guide, with photo tips and posting ideas, is here: how to make a cat clapping video.

Cat Clapping Meme FAQ

Is the clapping cat real?

The cat is real, but the grin and the hands are not. It's Aleksandr Kim's own black cat, and the human teeth and human hands were added with AI.

Is there a song in the original?

No. The original has no music, only room sound and loud claps. Videos made here sound the same way, so you can add any trending sound when you post yours on TikTok, Reels or Shorts.

Is Cat Clapping AI the official clapping cat app?

No. Cat Clapping AI is an independent tool and isn't affiliated with Aleksandr Kim (@merkurianin), Instagram, Meta, TikTok or ByteDance. It makes your own pet's version of the meme.

Does my cat have to be black?

No. Any pet works: a cat of any color, a dog, a rabbit or another animal, one per photo. Your pet keeps its own fur, markings and eye color.
